The Loggia della Mercanzia dates to the early 15th Century and is a wonderful example of the move from late Gothic to Renaissance architecture. Sano di Matteo designed the original building, but the upper floors were added much later. It is the original structure that is impressive, perfectly fitted into its medieval surroundings. Pillars that support the three main arches are decorated with statues of the Saints by Vecchietta and Antonio Federighi. The latter created the marble bench sitting in the right portico.
