The Le Tombe di Via Latina archaeological park was created in the late 19th Century after a series of excavations uncovered various sepulchres and tombs along the Via Latina. The Barberini sarcophagus on display in the Vatican museum was found here in the simple but elegant sepulchre. One tomb with its white stucco covered interior has depictions of an underwater world with tritons, Nereids and dancing semi-gods. While another tomb has many bright colours and elaborate pictures of mythological scenes featuring Apollo, Diana, Paris and Hercules, all tombs are very well preserved.
