The popular La Lizza Public Gardens in Siena were originally laid out in 1779. Further work took place in 1937 when the bastions of the Fortezza Medicea (or the Santa Barbara Fort) were converted into public gardens. There is now a grand fountain, which can be seen in Piazza della Libertà. The park area extends out to the area in front of the imposing building, between Viale Franci and Viale Maccari. On Wednesdays this area is taken over by the city’s huge weekly market.
