The II Sacro Bosco is also known as Parco dei Mostri or ‘Monster Park’ and can be found not far outside of the town. Duke Vicino Orsini created it shortly after the death of his wife in the middle of the 16th Century. It is a bizarre Renaissance theme park rather than a noble memorial to a beloved wife. Using the volcanic peperino stone that lay all over his estate, he spent years filling the park with grotesque sculptures completely out of keeping with the time. In the undergrowth is a leaning house as well as huge beasts.
