In medieval times the Sienese were gifted not only in creating wonderful sculptures and paintings but in building defensive walls. These were a necessity in a city where political moods were changing and protection from enemies was vital. The Fort of Porta Pispini is just one of the city’s fine examples of a fortification, built by Baldassare Peruzzi in the early 16th Century. There are 8 in total and all were constructed in a Gothic style with battlements supported by blind arches.
