The Fonte d’Ovile fountain was built around 1260 to replace an earlier existing fountain nearby. Over the centuries it has had very little maintenance, and the fact that it is still in good condition shows how skilful the original architects were. The fountain, which has always been just outside the city walls, is close to the city gate of the same name. It is built entirely of brick, with two double pointed arches on the front. These cover the basin once used for drawing of drinking water.
