The Fontana del Tritone stands in the middle of the square and was created by the architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It was commissioned by Pope Urban VIII in 1623, and it is considered to be one of the most spectacular fountains in the world. It consists of four interlacing dolphins supporting a pedestal made up by a shell with the god Triton on it. The statue is blowing into a Roman bugle from which a jet of water falls majestically below.
