Domus Aurea was thought to be 25 times larger than the Colosseum at the height of Nero’s reign. It’s said that Nero allowed Rome to burn in 64 AD so that this incredible building could be erected. Ancient writers called the palace the ‘Golden House’ due to some parts being overlaid in gold leaf and embedded with precious stones and mother-of-pearl; ivory ceilings and openings for creating showers of flowers and perfumes was also the order of the day. Now, after restoration work, visitors can enjoy this vast palace.
