The Diocletian thermal baths are the most impressive ones in Rome and in ancient times spread over a large part of the city. This included a bathing area, frigidarium and tepidarium as well as the circular exedra which corresponds to the present Piazza Esedra. Here visitors can see a large epigraphic collection of nearly 10,000 inscriptions, sarcophagi, mosaics and frescoes. Funeral material dating from the Republic period to the Imperial age is displayed in the gardens.
