Trieste has a strong theatrical tradition which explains the existence of the Civico Museo Teatrale Schmidl. It’s dedicated to the history and traditions of theatre, the only centre of documentation of this kind in the region, and one of few in Italy, second only to the one in the Scala in Milan. This is owed to Carlo Schmidl, the famous musical publisher of Trieste, who created the institute in 1924. There is a rich collection of posters and theatrical programmes, costumes, jewellery, models, puppet theatres and sketches, as well as a section devoted to machines for producing and recording sound.
