This was once the largest Imperial Stadium of Rome. The huge grassy area which can be located behind The Roman Forum and Colosseum was built in the 7th Century BC and staged everything from chariot racing to mock battles. During Julius Caesar’s time, the arena could accommodate 300,000 spectators. The area was split in two by a dividing barrier with mechanisms for counting laps. An Imperial Box was added under the Palatine by the Emperor Augustus, and a number of obelisks were erected here too - these can now be seen in other parts of the city.
