The Cecilia Metella’s Grave is an imposing circular monument and the best kept of the Appia Antica, dedicated to Cacilia Metella, who died between 50 and 40 B.C. She was a daughter of Q. Caecilius Metellus Cretico. Made up of two parts, the lower square part has lost the travertine cover and the circular upper part bears an inscription. The battlement that completes the grave dates back to 1302, when the Castani turned the mausoleum into the donjon of their nearby medieval castle.
