The Cathedral of St Matthew was founded by Roberto the Guiscard, consecrated by Pope Gregory VII and officially opened in March 1084. The building you see today is from June 1688 when it was rebuilt after an earthquake. The main entrance has been changed and the courtyard is surrounded by a covered walkway supported by twenty-eight columns with arches and a series of Roman tombs around the walls. To the south of the Cathedral stands the bell tower that date backs to 12th Century and the entrance to the Cathedral is through a bronze Byzantine door.
