The Cathedral of Santa Colomba was the city’s central focus in the middle ages. It was built on the site of a temple, dedicated to Hercules, and consecrated in the 12th Century. It was badly damaged in the earthquake of 1672 and what remains of the original building today is the red brick bell tower which was built to house the sacristy. This has pointed windows and terracotta coping with interlinking arches and shows how wonderful the former cathedral must have been.
