Once in the possession of the community of Tenno, the castle, with its mixture of architectural styles, fell to Bishop Vanga in 1210. It has been under the control of the Earls of Tyrol, Mastino della Scala and in 1388, captured by soldiers of the Visconti family, who held it until the 15th Century. It has been fought over many times over the centuries until Venice established its dominion over Lake Garda when it became the farthest outpost of the prince Bishops of Trento. During the Napoleonic Wars the castle was auctioned off into private ownership.
