Castello di San Giusto is one of the symbols of the city and is set on Trieste’s highest hill. Construction began in 1470 on the former site of a Venetian fort, but was not completed until 1630. There is a chapel dedicated to San Giorgio on the ground floor, and a large staircase lined with armour, which leads to the Venetian room where on the ceiling, is a large painting of Allegory of Venice, by Andrea Celesti (1637-1712). On the second floor is a collection of armour. A passage to the courtyard leads to the site museum and a restaurant.
