The town of Salsomaggiore is situated at the foot of the Parmesan Apennine. It was known back in Roman times for its salty waters which emerged from the ground. The area’s property passed from the Pallavicino family to the Farnese family, and then to the Bourbons before finally passing to Marie Louise. The curative properties of the waters were discovered by Doctor Lorenzo Berzieri and this discovery resulted in the area becoming a thermal bath resort. The Berzieri baths, inaugurated in 1923, have a typical Art Deco style.
