The bell tower was built around the 11th Century and has a wonderful base in a Romanesque style. It was originally taller and was reduced sometime in the 16th Century. There are marble fragments, and statue bases and a variety of columns with classical and Byzantine capitals. The Byzantine style is evident too in the high arcades. The structure has an interesting history with the vault on Via Pietà being the entrance of the Bishop’s Palace, and once used for public meetings before they took place inside the castle.
