The building has been greatly modified over the centuries and both the Sforza Chapel and the Cesi Chapel are later additions. The bell tower, at 75 metres, is the tallest in Rome. The interior has two aisles, monuments of Pope Nicholas IV and Clement IX and a 15th Century wooden ceiling. The semi-circular apse has a beautiful mosaic depicting the Triumph of the Virgin Mary and the altar has a relief by Pietro Bernini, Gian Lorenzo’s father.
