Constructed on an unusual Egyptian cross plan, San Francesco was built in the early 14th Century by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. Sadly, due to a fire in 1655, the contents have been lost but what visitors can see is the attractive nave with alternate black and white marble bands illuminated by large mullioned windows which result in an uncommonly intense light. Artwork worthy of note include: a fresco by Pietro Lorenzetti and ‘St. Ludwig D’Angio at the Feet of Boniface VIII’ and ‘The Martyrdom of the Franciscan Brothers in Ceuta’ by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
