The Basilica of S. Giovanni Evangelista is part of a group of 5th Century monuments. It was built by Galla Placidia in fulfilment of a vow made during a storm at sea who, after the death of her brother Honorius, returned to Ravenna from Constantinople with her son Valentinian III. It has had various works done over the centuries and was seriously damaged by bombing. The mosaics of the apse were lost, however displayed on the interior walls there are remaining fragments of the exquisite floor of 1213.
