Basilica of S. Francesco
Piazza San Francesco, Ravenna 48100 - Italy

Map
The original 5th Century church was dedicated to the Apostles. Nothing remains of the ancient construction and so the Basilica of S. Francesco was completely rebuilt in the 10th, and 11th Century and at the same time the imposing square bell tower was added. Beneath the high altar a 5th Century sarcophagus is clearly visible through a window. Columns of the Oratory type support the 10th Century crypt. The floor is always full of water and fragments of mosaics of the original church of Neone and a rather unusual sight.
