The Archivio di Stato is the city’s archive and is housed inside the Palazzo Piccolomini. It has a dazzling collection of manuscripts and parchments in its many rooms and corridors. There is a museum annexe where visitors can see Lorenzetti’s tablets entitled ‘The Allegory of Good Government’. There are also financial administrations of Siena - tablets of Biccherna and Gabella. These are made of painted wood and were used to cover registers. There is a study room where photocopies and microfilms can be obtained on request.
