The arch was erected by the Senate in honour of Emperor Constantine’s victory over Maxentius in A.D. 312. The monument, at 69-feet high and 84-feet wide, is the largest and the best preserved of all the Roman triumphal arches. The arch has 3 openings and is decorated with statues and reliefs from earlier structures – one from a monument dedicated to Marcus Aureliu and another depicting a hunt and a sacrifice to Apollo, which came from a monument of the time of Emperor Hadrian.
