The Apponale Tower in Riva del Garda was built in 1220 and raised to the height of 34m in 1555. It was intended as part of the town’s defence system and contained salt and corn stores, warehouses, and exchange banks of the Florentine merchants at its base. At one time it was used as a prison and in World War I it was used as a look-out post. Overhanging the tower is the city emblem – an angel. In the tower is a bell which dates from the 16th Century.
