Albornoz Fortress
Via Egidio Albornoz, Piediluco, Terni 05100 - Italy

Map

Built during the 1st Century AD, the Albornoz Fortress dominates Piediluco Lake. It was originally an outpost for Spoleto but had been abandoned by the late 1700s. It was occupied by Roberto D’Angio’s papal troops in the 14th Century before passing to Blasco Fernandez, cousin of cardinal Albornoz who remodelled parts of the castle. Later – in the early 16th Century – it was returned to the Pope. Long stretches of the walls remain, as does the keep and some reception rooms.
