Designed and built by Luigi Vanvitelli in 1780, the Villa Comunale was originally called Passeggio Reale (Royal Promenade). It was commissioned by a member of the royal family, King Ferdinand IV, who ordered it to be made into a public garden. The Villa Comunale is an outstanding example of Neapolitan Baroque and has many pathways, flower beds, statues and fountains including the famous Paperelle fountain. The Cassa Armonica and the monument to Giambattista Vico are worthy of note and the interior houses the Aquarium.
