The Torre di Mariano II was built in 1290 by one of Oristano’s best known rulers, the Giudice Mariano II. It is also known locally as the Torre di San Cristoforo. There is an inscription that records the erection of the tower, which is now on display in the Antiquarium Arborense. The tower originally formed the fulcrum of the medieval fortifications for Oristano. During the 19th Century the walls that adjoined the tower were demolished and the gateway through it, the Porta Mariano or Porta Manna, was once the city’s Northern gate.
