The Torre del Moro – or Tower of the Moor – was built in the 12th Century. It rises around 140 feet above the Corso Cavour, Orvieto’s main street. The name was derived from the figure on the coat of arms of a local family. The great bell, once used to time the working day of those building the cathedral, is 14th Century. It was cast in 1316 and is embellished with symbols of the town’s guilds. The bell is still in working order though a mechanical clock was installed in 1876. There are wonderful views over the town from the top.
