To the North West of the city of Pompei, outside the city walls, there are tombs lining the road. It was common practice during the 1st Century to place these elaborate tombs along the road which entered the city, both here and on the opposite side of Pompei. It is thought that the idea was to impress visitors by illustrating how great a city was in the Roman Empire. Mark Twain, on seeing these tombs, wrote about it in a chapter of his book ‘Innocents Abroad’.
