The Tower of Pisa is actually the freestanding bell tower of the cathedral and is the third structure in Pisa’s Campo dei Miracoli (field of miracles). The building work began on the tower in the 12th Century and continued for around 200 years, although the architect of the original project is unknown. The structure, which was built in three stages, was designed to stand vertically but the famous ‘lean’ towards the southwest began due to poor foundations while the white marble campanile was under construction.
