The land on which Tharros is built is shaped like a clenched fist, and boasts a robust Spanish watchtower at its highest point. The Phoenicians settled here as early as 800 BC. Tharros really flourished under the Carthaginians and after 238 BC it maintained its importance under Roman rule. The town was in decline by the time of the Imperial era and with the death of Pax Romana it suffered due to Moorish raids and was abandoned in 1070 in favour of the more secure Oristano. If you travel to Sardinia this is a must see place.
