The Teatro San Carlo is one of the oldest theatres in Europe. Charles of Bourbon commissioned Antonio Medrano to undertake the project. The theatre was opened on the 4th November 1737 (which is the king’s name day). The façade dates to 1812 and was added by Antonio Piccolini. He was also commission by Ferdinando of Bourbon to reconstruct the interior after the theatre burned down in 1816. The interior is richly decorated with gold and plasterwork; the theatre has over 1470 seats and boasts perfect acoustic qualities and is the venue for the famous Naples opera.
