The Teatro Regio was built in 1821-29 for Maria Luigia. Vincenzo Bellini inaugurated it on the 16 May 1829 with a performance of ‘Zaira’, and it has become one of the most famous opera theatres in the world. With a portico and a double row of windows and its neoclassical façade, the atrium leads into the elliptic stalls surrounded by orders of stages and a gallery. It is best to phone in advance if you want to visit the theatre, as it is busy all year round with a series of important artistic and cultural productions.
