The Teatro Bellini is the resident theatre for Naples and for the third time in its history was relaunched in 1988 after being closed for many years. It was constructed to a design of the architect Carlo Sorgente in 1864 but was destroyed by a fire only five years later. It reopened in 1878 with Bellini’s opera ‘I Puritani e I Cavalieri’, and the theatre was named after the maestro after being rebuilt by Sorgente. Returned to its former glory in 1992 it is now the venue for stage musicals, modern and classical drama and concerts
