The Stabian Baths are the oldest in Pompei - thought to have begun in the 4th Century BC. They are located in what was a commercial street stretching from the Forum to the eastern end of town. The interior is extremely well preserved with some of its buildings decorated with intriguing graffiti. There’s a gymnasium with columns, a frigidarium, tepidarium and bath tubs. The oldest section has an open air swimming pool, and rooms for oiling. The Stabian Baths were damaged during the earthquake of AD 62 and were still not restored when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79.
