The St. Lorenzo or University Bridge was known from the 11th Century as the St. Stefano Bridge when mentioned in a medieval document. It was know by that name at least until the 15th Century because of adjacent Benedictine convent of the same name and it was given the name of St. Lorenzo in the 16th Century after the nearby church. The bridge is close to the port, which was the most important point of commercial activity in the town.
