St Giovenale church in Orvieto was built over an existing temple in 1004. Some claim that the church, now with a fortified tower, was once the town’s ancient cathedral church. Inside, the building has three naves with huge pillars. There are some frescos which date from the 12th to the 16th Century including work by the Sienese School. The Byzantine altar is worthy of note and made from sculptured marble. On the right of the church is a portal depicting St Giovenale in the lunette.
