The idea for the Spire of the Immaculate Conception came out of a wish to preserve one of the many celebratory structures which had been built in order to change the Baroque look of the city of Naples. The inspiration came in the mid 18th Century to celebrate one of the most important positions where the Jesuits had preached. The monument includes sculptures of the Jesuit saints and stories depicting Mary, the creation of Matteo Bottighero, and Francesco Pagano.
