The Spire of San Gennaro was designed and built by Cosimo Fanzago in 1637 and is the oldest spire in Naples. It stands in an ancient square that for centuries had stood opposite the main entrance of the Duomo until the widening of Via Duomo in the 1800s. It was built in the piazza as a votive offering to San Gennaro for averting disaster when Vesuvius erupted in 1631.The spire is made up of four volutes that support a rich Ionic capital upon which rests a bronze statue of the saint, created by Tommasso Montani.
