The Solfatara ovens consist of two caves that, at the end of the 19th Century, were dug out of the side of the mountain to create natural saunas. People would come here to spend a while enjoying the heat and benefiting from inhaling the strong sulphurous vapours. Those who took the thermal sessions considered them to be very effective in curing respiratory illnesses, skin complaints, and rheumatism. The Campi Flegrei natural heat baths were known to have existed during the Classical period.
