The church of Sant’Andrea is one of the town’s oldest buildings. It was founded in the 7th Century and thought be have been built over a Roman temple and then rebuilt throughout the 12th and 14th centuries. Sant’Andrea was once Orvieto’s principal church. Here in 1201, the Fourth Crusade was decreed by Pope Innocent III, and in 1281, with Charles of Anjou in attendance, Martin IV was crowned pope. There is an impressive 12-sided bell tower and inside the church are what is believed to be Roman granite columns. The pulpit is 10th Century and there are some fresco fragments.
