San Pietro in Gessate was the home of the Benedictines in 1344 and the church was built in its present form in 1476. It has been attributed to the architects Guiniforte and Pietro Antonio Solari; the building is a result of a unitary plan. It is the distinctive mark of Solari workmanship in a Latin cross shape with three naves opening out to a chapel of the nobility. One of the most patronised chapels is the Grifi chapel just to the left of the transept. This was decorated by the painters Bernardino Zenale and Donato Montorfano in 1487.
