The convent attached to the church of San Pietro a Maiella has been the home of the Conservatory of Music since the early 19th Century. It was created during the decade of French dominion by combining four 16th and 17th Century institutions to take abandoned children off the streets and teach them music and catechism. It has been one of the most important institutions in the whole of Italy with a great number of masters having passed through these doors such as Giovan Battista Pergolesi, Domenico Cimarosa, Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti, Vincenzo Bellini and Saverio Mercadante.
