The Franciscan convent is in a glorious setting among an ancient holm oak grove, planted as insulation against the winter wind. Fortunato, after whom the church is dedicated, was a priest around the year 400 who was well known for his charity to the poor. The church was built over a Roman basilica in the 5th Century and rebuilt during the 16th Century. Later it was given a Baroque interior but still has its frescoes by Gozzoli. There are also frescoes depicting the life of St Francis by Tiberio d’Assisi.
