The many ruins of Ocriculum are to be found about a mile below the town. The site overlooks the Tiber and there have been excavations carried out here since the time of Pope Pius VI in 1776. The huge head of Jupiter, along with other pieces, which can now be seen in the Vatican Museum, were taken from this spot. Although the ruins here are in a fairly poor condition, visitors to the site can still see the remains of a theatre, amphitheatre, baths, and funerary monuments.
