The 18th Century Royal Villa of Monza was commissioned by Maria Teresa of Austria from a plan by Piermarini. The large complex is built on a classical U-plan and has a beautiful park garden. The villa has two storeys with steps leading to a belvedere. The greenhouse rotunda has frescoes by Andrea Appiani. The villa passed to the Savoy family and Umberto I remodelled the building into a Neo-baroque style. The parkland extends over almost 700 hectares and now contains a race course, golf course, tennis club and hockey rink.
