The palace was built in 1600-1602 for Filippo III, king of Spain. Restored in 1837, it suffered serious damage during WWII. In 1888, Umberto I ordered statues of Naples’ ruling monarchs to be placed in the arcades. The Courtyard of Honour is decorated in coloured marble and there are frescoed ceilings of the 17th and 18th centuries and furnishings from the 1840s and 1860s. Note the Court Theatre, used for festive occasions, the Throne Room, with symbols and depictions of the provinces of the Kingdom, the King’s Study, with his desk and two secretaires that were made for Napoleon Buonaparte.
