Founded in the early 19th Century as a cemetery for the hospital named ‘Ospedale Maggiore’ or ‘Ca’ Granda’. This unusual building consists of a perimeter wall with a church at its centre. Dedicated to Saint Michael it is no longer used as place of worship. Another wall was added in 1725, including large lobate structures. It became a washhouse in 1840 for the hospital and when a smallpox epidemic broke out in 1870, 5,000 people were isolated here. Today it is an open-air garden and a play area for children, while in summer it is used for open-air cinema projections.
