Erected in 1543 and all but destroyed in 1860, it is a fortress, which is a symbol of papal authority over Perugia. It was on the orders of Pope Paul III Farnese, who had pillaged the city in 1540 and annexed it to the church. Construction was assigned to Antonio da Sangallo, the great supporter of military architecture of the age. There were many buildings destroyed for the fortress to be built which didn’t endear the people towards the Rocca Paolina.
